Role of North Korea
When the Soviet Union took over Korea, the U.S. feared that the Soviet Union would take over the Korean peninsula. The U.S. moved to the South part of Korea while the Soviet Union occupied the North. The Soviet Union and the United States agreed to temporarily divide Korea and they would later reunite. North Korea was ruled under a communist- government. Their goal was to unite with South Korea and rule under communism. The South did not agree to rule under communism. North Korea wanted to accomplish this goal so they wanted to unite Korea by force. On June 1950, the North Korean troops crossed the 38th parallel and invaded the South Korea. After the invasion, a war was initiated called the Korean War.
Effects of North Korea's involvement
The role of North Korea made a big impact in Korean history. North Korea invaded South Korea which initiated a war. North Korea's invasion brought about the United Nations to take actions against the aggressors. This immediately brought up heavy military and naval involvement of the United States. The United States and the United Nations tried to contain North Korea's army and defeat it. They also at the same time, begin to respond to the problem of communism. At the end of the war, North Korea lost 2 million people which is about 20% of North Korea's population.
Implications
The implications that I can draw from the role of North Korea is that they were the one who started the Korean War. If they did not invade South Korea, maybe they could have had peace and not have tension that has today still not ended. I think North Korea gave the U.S. a reason to fight because they were a communist nation and the U.S. was strictly an anti-communism nation. They felt that they needed to protect the South Korean from being taken over by a communist- government. I think the role of North Korea was bad that they wanted to spread communism to South Korea but they did have the right intention of uniting both nations and have Korea again united. I think the think that went wrong was that they also wanted to spread communism.
