Role of United States
After World War II, the Soviet Union took Korea from Japan. The U.S. feared that the Soviet Union would take all of the Korean peninsula so the U.S. immediately moved into the South of Korea. The Soviet Union and the United States agreed to temporarily divide Korea and later reunite it. However, North Korea has learned the practices of communism from the Soviet Union while the U.S. supported the government in South Korea. There was tension between the 2 nations because of the different regime they ruled under. In June 25, 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea. The U.S. was stunned and felt that North Korea actions represented aggression. Within 2 days, the U.S. offered South Korea sea and naval troops to help them defend against North Korea. The U.S. felt that if they defended South Korea, an anti-communist against North Korea, a communist nation, they would be saving South Korea and other countries that are endanger of developing communism.
The effects of the U.S. Involvement
The effects of the U.S. involvement in the Korean War is that they helped South Korea rebel against North Korea. North Korea felt a sense of weakness and hostility attitude toward the U.S. The North Koreans feared that the United States would use nuclear weapons on them. This resulted as during the war, most of the North Koreans were forced to live underground to escape from the bombing. At the end of the Korean War, the U.S. casualties were that 36,934 were killed and 103,284 were wounded.
Implications
The implications I can draw about the role of the United States was that I feel that the South Koreans could not have fought without the U.S. The U.S. was the ones who defended them and probably saved them for communism. The U.S. wanted to stop the Soviet Union and China from spreading communism and at some point abolish it. The U.S. role in the Korean probably made a big impact on the South Koreans and for the nations who were in danger of being a communist-nation. I think the United States did not want to get involve with the war but they probably found it was a chance to stop the Soviet Union from spreading communism and to protect the South Koreans and those who were endanger of communism.
